But how many of us actually reach our goals? We often spend a lot of time thinking or talking about what we want. But we have not taken any steps to achieve it. It's not because we're lazy. That's because we don't know where to start. We don't have a plan. However, life planning can serve as a roadmap or guide to making those dreams come true. They show us the things we don't want to experience again. By keeping your values in mind, you can make decisions that align with your dreams. Once you've identified your vision and taken stock of your priorities and values, the next step is to set effective goals. Try to set medium- and long-term goals that are realistic and achievable. Identify different goals for the areas of your life that you assessed in your self-assessment. Make sure they align with your priorities and values. Use the SMART method to set effective goals. INTELLIGENT means: Your action plan should include a step-by-step process to help you reach your intermediate goals. Identify the daily actions that build up over time and help you build momentum. Put them on your calendar and commit to doing something every day. Post your action plan somewhere you can see it, like on top of your desk. Don't forget to celebrate each milestone and reward yourself for your accomplishments. Remember that your life project is a tool that will guide you towards your goals. However, we all experience setbacks at some point, and that's okay. If you miss a goal or take longer than planned to reach it, don't give up. Review your life plan and make adjustments if necessary. As you write your life plan, ask yourself the following questions and consider your answers: When creating your dream life vision, try to be as precise as possible. Think about the results that accompany the desired outcome. For example, let's say your goal is to become a director of your company. Ask yourself why you want to achieve this goal and what difference it would make in your life. Some of the possible results can be: Once you know the results, work backwards to define the steps that will help you achieve that goal on an ongoing basis. Be sure to identify any actions that may require assistance. Make a list of trusted friends and family and ask them to help you. Writing a life plan can be fun and exciting. It can also increase your motivation. But one day something could happen that deflates your motivation like an old balloon. Perhaps you are facing an unforeseen challenge. Maybe you are arguing with your best friend. Or maybe you just get up on the wrong side of the bed. Whatever it is, you will lose your motivation. You will want to throw in the towel. And that's why you need to prepare by asking yourself how to stay motivated. If you're working toward a big goal, break it down into smaller goals. Celebrate and reward yourself for these accomplishments. Ask your trusted friends and loved ones to help keep you motivated when the going gets tough. Setting important goals is a great way to measure your progress. Going back to our previous example, becoming a director of a company does not happen overnight. The best way to measure progress would be to break it down into smaller goals. These objectives may include the development of new skills required for the position of Director. An intermediate goal could be the completion of training or certification, for example. Another promotion goal for a budding director might be to consistently rise through the ranks. If she's starting out as a project manager, her next goal might be to become a program manager. Set deadlines for meeting each progress goal. But even if you're happy where you are now, you still need to plan for your future growth and development. And if you're an entrepreneur, you already know that planning is a prerequisite for business success. Ways to include it in your life plan Financial planning is closely related to your career aspirations. Set realistic financial goals for your chosen career. When setting financial goals, keep your priorities and values in mind. For example, if spending time with your family is important to you, you may choose to prioritize more free time over more money. These can be weekly, monthly or quarterly depending on your goals. Give them an update in writing or in person at the agreed upon time. Review your SMART goals and measure your progress. Let your responsible partner celebrate each victory with you. A life plan is a guide to help you reach your goals. It has to be flexible enough to adapt if something doesn't work. If you are having difficulty reaching your goals, work with your accountability partner to adjust your life plan and set more realistic goals. A life project is a personal document.
